ABOUT

Ian Lockwood has spent more than three decades exploring and documenting the diverse natural and human landscapes of South Asia. With an insatiable fascination for the region’s ecosystems, landscapes, sacred spaces, and history, he has focused his work on celebrating the human and ecological complexities of the sub-continent. As an educator and photographer, Ian has chronicled endangered landscapes, highlighted conservation challenges, pursued rare species, been a pilgrim on sacred peaks, celebrated rare successes in ecological restoration and more.

His early work featured handcrafted black-and-white photographs, complemented by scholarly commentary and hand-drawn maps. The then under-appreciated Western Ghats, as well as Bangladesh’s fragmented forests and floodplains, were an early source of motivation. These efforts culminated in multiple published articles, books and photographic exhibitions. After moving to Sri Lanka in 2005, the resplendent island became a key focus of his artistic and scientific explorations. While digital tools have transformed his methods, Ian’s mission remains unchanged—exploring conservation and ecological change across South Asia. He currently lives and works as an environmental educator in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
