Phawngpui East View, Saiha District. Looking east from below the summit of Phawngpui. Also called the “Blue Mountain,” Phawngpui is Mizoram’s highest peak (at 2,165m) and is located in the remote south-eastern part of the state. The area is protected as a national park and offers excellent bird-watching and other natural history delights for those willing to take the bumpy road there from Aizawl. It is especially known for its populations of Blyth’s Tragopan (Tragopan blythii) and Dark Rumped Swifts (Apus acuticauda). (December 2004)
